US Soccer Age Group Chart

In 2016, US Soccer announced a change from School Year age groups to Birth Year age groups.  All Illinois Youth Soccer Association events, league play and sanctioned tournaments are run in birth year age divisions.

  • Kinder Kickers:  This program is for 4 and 5 year olds.  Kids must turn 4 before September 1st for the Fall Season and before April 1st for the Spring Season.  Kids who turn 6 in the Fall of their Kindergarten year have the option to register in U8 if the parent feels they are ready to play at that level
  • U8, U10 & U12:  We follow the birth year age divisions outlined in the chart below as required by Illinois Youth Soccer Association and by the leagues we participate in

Kinder Kickers

AGES:  4 & 5 year olds

  • Must turn 4 by Sept. 1st for the Fall Season and by April 1st for the Spring Season
  • Kids who turn 6 in the Fall of their Kindergarten year have the option to register in U8 if their parent feels they are ready for that level

PROGRAM:  Designed to introduce the kids to soccer through super fun games and lots of movement that builds confidence in controlling the ball with their feet.

PRACTICES:  This group will have one 1-hour practice per week for a total of 8 weeks.  Practice day & time will be determined by the volunteer coaches.

LOCATION:  Practices will be at the upper soccer field behind Algonquin Road School on Old Hunt Road (on the hill above the baseball fields).

UNIFORM & EQUIPMENT:

  • Shin Guards and Cleats: Shin guards are mandatory and cleats are optional, but recommended.  Cleats with a front cleat at the tip of the toes (often found in baseball and football cleats) are not allowed for safety reasons.
  • Ball:  Everyone should have their own Size 3 soccer ball and bring it to every practice.  We have a limited number of extra balls and encourage everyone to bring their own ball if possible.
  • Water Bottle:  Everyone should bring a full water bottle to each practice.
  • Uniform:  If you ordered a uniform, it will be handed out in the first or second practice.
  • Jewelry:  Not allowed during practice for the safety of the players

U8

AGES:  6-7 year olds according to the Age Chart above (U8 means "Under 8" on January 1st of the current school year)
School Year Equivalent:  Kindergarten Fall Birthdays, All 1st Graders, 2nd Grade Spring Birthdays

PROGRAM:  Designed to teach kids the game of soccer and how to play as a team, while building soccer skills and getting their first experience of competitive game play against other teams.

PRACTICES:  This group will have two 1-hour practices per week for a total of 8-10 weeks.  Practice day & time will be determined by the volunteer coaches.

GAMES:  For the past several years, we have been invited, as guests, to participate in the Wauconda Area Youth Soccer Club in-house U8 league and plan to continue as long as team spots are available for us.

Games take place in Wauconda (location varies) and typically take place on Saturday mornings or on a recurring weeknight.  Game format is 5 vs 5 (including Goalie) with four 12-minute periods.  Depending on registration numbers, the teams may be co-ed or there may be separate boy and girl teams.  As a recreational league, our goal is for all the kids to get a lot of playing time, regardless of skill level.

LOCATION:  Practices will be at the Soccer Field at Foxmoor Park in the far outfield of the baseball field

UNIFORM & EQUIPMENT:

  • Shin Guards and Cleats:  Shin guards are mandatory and cleats are recommended.  Cleats with a front cleat at the tip of the toes (often found in baseball and football cleats) are not allowed for safety reasons.  Referees will check the kids' shin guards and cleats before each game and they will not be allowed to play without shin guards or if their cleats have a front cleat.
  • Ball:  Everyone must have their own Size 3 soccer ball and should bring it to every practice and game.
  • Water Bottle:  Everyone should bring a full water bottle to each practice and game.
  • Uniform:  Uniforms should be worn for all games at WAYSC.  New players will need to purchase a uniform during registration.  Returning players may purchase a new uniform or use old uniform if it still fits.
  • Jewelry:  Not allowed during practices or games for the safety of the players

U10

AGES:  8-9 year olds according to the Age Chart above (U10 means "Under 10" on January 1st of the current school year)
School Year Equivalent:  2nd Grade Fall Birthdays, All 3rd Graders, 4th Grade Spring Birthdays

PROGRAM:  Designed to teach kids the game of soccer, the role of different positions and how to play as a team, while building soccer skills and getting the next level of experience of competitive game play against other teams on a larger field.

PRACTICES:  This group will have two 1-hour practices per week for a total of 8-10 weeks.  Practice day & time will be determined by the volunteer coaches.

GAMES:  Our U10 team plays in the Northwest Regional Soccer League (NSRL) against other local Northwest Suburb communities and will have 8 games on the weekends (typically Saturday mornings, but occasional afternoon or Sunday games may occur).

Game format is 7 vs 7 (including Goalie) with two 25-minute halves and a 5-minute halftime.  Typically the teams are co-ed, but there may be separate boys and girls teams depending on registration numbers across the league.  As a recreational league, our goal is for all the kids to get a lot of playing time, regardless of skill level.

LOCATION:  U10 practices will be on the smaller field on Algonquin Road by the ARS Playground.
